Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is applying for the resources to support a 6 month visiting fellowship (over a 5 year period) to give the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning group at the University of Nottingham the opportunity to undertake a sustained programme of research with Prof. Peter Brucker of University of Osnabrueck in Germany. This exciting project will enable the ASAP group to draw upon Professor Brucker's considerable expertise across a range of research directions in automated scheduling. This fellowship will provide particular value to EPSRC by enabling Prof Brucker to contribute to several significant EPSRC projects that have already been funded. Particular application areas that Prof Brucker's visiting fellowship will contribute to are:(1) Scheduling on the Grid (funded by EPSRC grant GR/S67661/01)(2) Personnel Scheduling (funded by EPSRC grants GR/S31150/01 And GR/N35205/01) (3) Production Scheduling (funded by EPSRC grant GR/R95319/01)(4) Robot Scheduling(5) Transport SchedulingHowever, this fellowship will certainly not be limited to these areas. Indeed, we see part of Prof Bruckers role in this visiting fellowship as being that of an advisor to the group across all of our scheduling and optimisation research. The group currently has a portfolio of 20 externally funded research grants worth over 3M. This includes one grant from BBSRC, one from ESRC, one from EU and the rest from EPSRC. Our research funding portfolio includes significant industrial support. Of course, we do not know exactly what challenging research issues we will be facing in the years to come and we would like the flexibility to request Prof Bruker's expertise as and when it is required.
