Summary on Grant Application Form
Significant improvements in product design and manufacturing processes occur when new data can be retrieved which, hitherto, was considered impossible to obtain. The unique property of the laser as a source of coherent light has provided for non-intrusive diagnostics which can obtain this data. In addition, significant advances in engineering design occurs when new material processing techniques are developed. The ability to select the wavelength and control the intensity profile in the beam of high power lasers have provided these processes. The ideas in this proposal investigate how the application of modern optics, imaging and laser technology can provide these advances. The research will harness the technology to provide new techniques, processes and instruments which will improve the quality of life and give industry a competitive edge. The proposal is specifically intended to engage in high risk/high value investigations which have the potential to be seminal in producing new research directions.
