Summary on Grant Application Form |
Traditional ink jet printers are limited to printing liquid inks. A dry powder jet printer could tremendously expand the way in which materials are used for pharmaceutical dispensing, functional gradient materials (FGM) fabrication and combinatorical research. Our preliminary experiments on a new drop-ondemand dry powder jet printer have successfully demonstrated the possibility of dispensing uniform dry powder drops as low as 50 micro gram. By using such printer, we can dispense small amounts of dry powder especially those restricted to use in the dry state only, such as high density powder materials which are difficult to disperse in liquid media, pharmaceutical powders which will be dosed in capsules and tablets, and dispensing in high temperature environments where liquid ink cannot be applied. We ask for modest funds to demonstrate the feasibility of printing a wide range of dry powders on demand.
