Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is concerned with developing new models for elastic anisotropy in polycrystalline metals and testing existing theories of the links between ultrasonically measured elasticity and plasticity developed by the proposed visiting fellow, Dr. Mishakin. In addition to making significant and novel theoretical developments, the work on our current project (GR/S01436/01 & GR/S01436/01), in collaboration with metallurgists at Birmingham University, will be greatly enhanced by the involvement of an experienced theoretician in this area. Dr. Mishakin's work will investigate ways of using different types of wavemode generated and detected using our unique non-contact ultrasonic sensors, to measure crystallographic texture. We particularly need the input of an experienced ultrasonic model developer in this area that has a detailed understanding of the underlying metallurgy. Our current project has shown some previously unreported and very exciting results where the anisotropic elasticity of sheet metal is not symmetric about the rolling direction. This throws into doubt many of the previously published work and ideas in this interdisciplinary area.
