Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme is aimed at improving our current understanding of the electronic structure of non-cuprate superconductors. The studies will concentrate on investigation of the electronic structure of the BaPb1-xBixO3 system by UPS, XPS and energy loss spectroscopies, using high quality single crystal samples. The results of these studies will be supplenmented by XAS, EXAFS and resonant ARPES measurements being conducted under separate SERC support at SRS, Daresbury. Results will be compared with those obtained from 'model' compounds containing Bi in known oxidation states, including BaBiO2.5 (BiIII), and with other mixed BiIII/BiV oxides. Comparison will be made with the related Ba1-xKxBiO3 system. The aim is to obtain a clear understanding of the evolution of the band structure and charge distribution on doping, particularly in the important region around the metal-to-non-metal transition. In addition, cation segregation in these phases will be characterised. The link between the rate of surface degradation and the electronic structure of BaPb1-xBixO3, apparent from initial results using ceramic samples, will be investigated. The initial stages of degradation will be studied by the adsorption of probe molecules such as H2O and CO2 in UHV. These results will be compared with similar experiments on Ba1-xKxBiO3, in order to elucidate the reasons for the differing reactivities of these systems.
