Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme is concerned with the investigation of convective heat transfer through rotating passages that are relevant to gas turbine applications. The aim is to develop the capability to examine experimentally the effects of the coriolis force and of curvature on local surface heat transfer. Through a previous SERC grant the applicants have developed a rotating flow water-rig and using LDA obtained mappings of the flow development through a rotating U-bend. The applicants now seek support to adopt this rig for heat transfer measurements. The use of water, which allows us to reproduce engine operating conditions, creates severe practical problems in heat transfer measurements which are not present when air is the working fluid. The presence of rotation introduces further practical complications in the proposed programme. The applicants will first test different measuring techniques, based on liquid crystal methods, in the measurement of heat transfer in water flow through stationary passages. The most promising of these alternatives will then be applied to the investigation of convective heat transfer in a rotating U-bend at conditions for which LDA measurements have already been obtained.
