Summary on Grant Application Form
We request support to replace the obsolete single crystal X-ray diffractometers with state of the art equipment. The single crystal X-ray structure analysis is vital to the research of 27 research groups in Oxford chemistry and of these 12 are major users some of whom require up to 50 structures per annum. For the majority of analyses the object is to determine chemical structure and molecular conformation and to obtain accurate molecular dimensions but a very significant part of the work is for the determination of absolute configuration for Prof. Baldwin and Drs. Bavis, fleet and Harwood. Significant new areas of research are being opened up that involve very large amounts of instrument time. Drs. Prout, Heyes and Dobson have started a project to use solid state NMR techniques and X-ray structure analysis at many (typically about 10) different temperatures to study molecular motions in crystals, Dr Beer requires the structures of macropolycycles with in excess of 100 non-hydrogen atoms per molecules, Dr. Downs wishes to work on very unstable compounds at low temperatures and Dr. OHare work entails the study of diffuse scatter from layer intercalates necessitating image plate or CCD technology.
