Densely spaced (subnanometer) wavelength routed (WR) networks are currently of great interest. Despite significant theoretical work; two main questions are unanswered. These are the minimum wavelength requirement to satisfy network connectivity in real transport networks and the limitations due to channel interactions arising from fibre nonlinearities and gain peaking in cascaded EDFAs, for realistic add-drop scenarios. To answer these questions we propose to set up a recirculating multi-wavelength amplified network test-bed, a first such facility in the UK. Point-to-point transmission will be extended to simulate realistic add-drop network scenarios by integrating a WR node with the recirculating loop. Transmission limitations due to the combination of amplifier gain peaking and fibre nolinearities will be measured as a function of number of wavelength and their allocation, transmission distances, amplifier spacing and dispersion management. The experimental results will provide input to our theoretical work on (I) WR and allocation algorithms and (ii) modelling of fibre nonlinearities using a realistic EDFA model ad will define the optimal design rules for wavelength routed network architectures, and the specification of key components for these networks. Carried out in collaboration with BNR, GPT/Fibreway, BT and Corning, this is a novel timely and cost effective programme.
