Summary on Grant Application Form
Active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCD) represent a major component of the current world-wide displays market. Consequently there is a significant effort to enhance their performance and to reduce system manufacturing costs. In the context of the EMD programme, it is significant that both of these goals rest upon the improvement in the electronic performance of the material. The key aim of this proposal is to carry out innovative research which will reveal the limiting factors in the material and moreover to identify which process steps influence the critical material parameters. This objective will thus help us to develop processing techniques in an informed way. The essence of this work will involve high resolution chemical imaging to identify the nature and spatial distribution of chemical impurities supported by TEM analysis of structural properties. This data will be linked through industrial collaboration to laser processing technology and device performance. Poly-silicon is a complex material: this project will aim to develop new forms of microscopic analysis based on STM e.g., localised EBIC using STM, which may allow us to understand electrical properties of this material with unprecedented spatial resolution.
