Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is made by an Alliance of Chemistry Research Groups (ACRG) to equip the newly refurbished 7.1 XAFS station on the SRS with the world's most compact and fast solid state detector (SSD) for fluorescence XAFS data collection from small samples. The design of this SSD brings together various recent technological advances. The primary driving force of the proposal is to do new science in areas of chemistry that have hitherto been inaccessible by the XAFS technique. The detector design is well matched to the increased photon flux and smaller spot size that will become available when the upgrade to 7.1 is complete in the summer 1997. The proposed detector development will have an impact on other XAFS facilities as well as other SR based techniques e.g. MAD. The development is also of strategic importance for the planned upgrade of the SRS and the exploitation of increased brilliance from the future UK source, DIAMOND.
