Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will build on our recent success in stabilising highly diffractive photorefractive polymer composites against phase separation, and reaching the charge mobility limit to response rate. A range of test materials is formed from very simple variations in the compositions, which will be characterised first for relative photorefraction and absorption and effective trap site density (and therefore holographic resolution, taking into account the optical quality of the media). A number of optical techniques will then characterise fully the dispersive charge carrier mobility in these materials, yielding new information on the trade-off necessary between dipole moments, trap density and mobility. We have reason to believe a significant improvement in mobility is possible. Finally the optical dependence of the dispersive mobility will be studied across the spectrum. Both intensity- and wavelength-dependent effects will be resolved with potential for hologram readout stabilisation.
