It is proposed to carry out research aimed at combining the rapidly developing technologies of opto-electronic Near Infra-Red sources and detectors, optical fibres, and Tomography to measure the in-cylinder distribution of hydrocarbon fuel vapour in I.C. engines. The ultimate goal is to develop a technique suitable for use in Indirect- and, Direct-Injected automotive and stationary engines. In the currently proposed research, the technique will be optimised and demonstrated in steady-state and transient tests in a laboratory bomb.New NIR technology has already been exploited for many chemical analysis applications, notably for HC detection. Both optical fibre technology and tomography have previously been adapted for engine applications. The proposed combination is novel and unique, and presents several significant challenges.Optimisation of the distribution of fuel vapour in the cylinder of a running engine is an important goal in engine research and design. Techniques to measure this parameter reliably for real fuel mixtures do not yet exist. Hence, the results of this research will be used by academic researchers and industrial engine and fuel/additive developers. Therefore, this project has support and participation from potential long-term users in the automotive and fuel industries.
