Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a four year roll on proposal for the University of Surrey Ion Beam Centre (previously the Ion Beam Facility for Microelectronics). The change in title reflects the increase in the range of materials and semiconductor structures that users are investigating. The centre provides world-class ion beam facilities for EPSRC approved users for (i) the modification of materials and (ii) ion beam analysis, which are supported by processing and materials characterisation. Interaction with users, projected to number about 45 grant holders during this period, is collaborative in nature and entails a wide ranging programme of research spanning Si devices and technology, including formation of ultra-shallow and buried layers and light emission, isolation and doping of III-V quantum well devices and lasers, interdiffusion and surface segregation in polymers, low temperature processing and doping of a Si-based thin films for displays, surface modification of metals and analysis of biological materials. Research results will be published and knowledge will be transferred to industrial collaborators. Research and training activities will support the aims of the NMI and NESM whilst rationalisation and participation in ASM/TRIM will ensure that the Centre is at the forefront of silicon research.
