Summary on Grant Application Form |
These study aims at providing experimental data and theoretical models that will be useful in determining wave impact forces on off-shore structures. Of particular concern are those parts of a structure that may be hit by the crests of the highest waves, for which only the most rudimentary methods are at present available, and where fluid-structure interaction is likely to be important. An existing experimental rig at Manchester will be modified to enable a wider range of experiments on bodies hitting waves together with a comprehensive range of measurements. The water and air pressures will be measured together with the motions of the impacting body, including oscillations induced by the impact. Air injected into the water will extend the range of conditions considered.Parallel development of theoretical models will take place at Bristol. Initially with a simple pressure-impulse model, but then moving on to include effects of trapped and dispersed air bubbles, and body interaction in more sophisticated models. These models and the experimental data will be useful in a wider range of applications.
