Large existing sewers are considerable assets which wastewater utilities will require to operate for the foreseeable future to maintain health and the quality of life in cities. Despite their existence for more than a century suprising little guidance is available to manage these systems I order to minimise sediment problems. A joint study is proposed, between leading UK researchers in this area, to refine and utilise new knowledge gained form field data, laboratory results and CFD simulations to devise cost beneficial engineering tools for the application of small invert taps to localise the deposition of sediments in sewers at accessible points for maintenance. Existing field data, collected under previous ESPRC and WRc funded programmes will be supplemented by limited additional data, and CFD models of in-sewer storage structures will be further developed to optimise trap configuration. New guidance will be produced for trap siting, geometry and linked to a cost-benefit assessment procedure to enable system operators to approach in-sewer sediment maintenance pro-actively rather than reactively as happens now. Pre-production prototype software will be produced which may subsequently be further developed into a stand alone sewer maintenance commercial package.
