Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recently within the SSLAM link-photonics project the feasibility of high power operation of the Tm-silica fibre laser at 1.9um has been demonstrated. This proposal extends that study to fully characterise the laser, to investigate new excitation schemes and to develop high energy pulsed operation. The 1.9um radiation has strong absorption in biological tissues. The nature of the tissue interaction by cw and pulsed 1.9um radiation is to be investigated to guide further development of the laser and to assess the capability of the fibre laser for medical application.
