Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the ULOS project A3 (GR/J23198 and GR/J23532) the groundwork was laid for fully non-linear simulation of free surface flows around offshore structures, based on a potential flow model. This uses a finite element formulation, with structure and unstructured triangular and tetrahedral meshes which adapt with the evolving free surface. The new project will extend previous analysis for waves interacting with fixed structures to the important case of freely floating structures. Issues to be addressed include improvement and extension of the mesh generation methodology; use of a coordinate transformation to facilitate application of the method in both deep and shallow waters; and implementation of an effective scheme for applying the boundary conditions on a body which can undergo large motions. The methodology will be exercised for simple generic bodies for which comparisons with alternative data can be made. Numerical experiments will be conducted in regular waves and focussed wave groups. Special features will be investigated, such as steep wave effects and drift behaviour of freely floating bodies.
