Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work based at UMIST will be integrated into the global objectives of the Laboratory-on-a-Chip consortium. The particular contribution of UMIST will be the development of generic integrated detection technology that may be adapted to match individual device needs for both microanalytical and microsynthetic systems. Key issues will include consideration of the techniques of: Optical absorbance, fluorescence and refractive index; and Electrochemical conductivity and voltammetric detection. The other primary criteria will include: square-section channel geometry (width and depth); sensitivity; signal-to-noise; spatial and temporal resolution; reproducibility with respect to geometric and materials stability; and the effect of applied electric fields (electrochemical measurements). Models will be developed to describe the design parameters for optical wave-guide based detectors, and microband electrochemical detectors. Optimised demonstrators will be constructed as proof-of-concept systems in collaboration with the consortium industrial partners.
