Summary on Grant Application Form
In many turbulent flows, in engineering applications, conditions across the near-wall sub-layer depart considerably from those of local equilibrium, implied by the universal wall-law. The computationally efficient wall-function approach, inevitably results in unreliable heat and fluid flow predictions. Low-Reynolds-number models are often not a practical option, because of the associated increase in grid requirements and costs. Here we propose to develop and test new strategies for handling turbulent transport in the near-wall sub-layer. We intend to look at new analytical and numerical schemes that can capture important features of near-wall turbulence without the need for the excessively fine meshes, necessary in the low-Reynolds-number treatments.
