The Water Infrastructure and Treatment Engineering (WITE) Programme was launched by the EPSRC in 1997. In response to this initiative the present proposal seeks to assess the feasibility of applying tomographic techniques in the water industry.Preliminary discussions have taken place with personnel from Yorkshire Water. In addition the WITE workshop in Birmingham on 10 June provided a useful insight into a variety of challenges faced by the industry. It has become evident that there is considerable commonality between processes that are encountered in the water industry and many of those that have been considered previously for industrial process tomography. For instance these may include condition assessment of popes, particle monitoring, flow monitoring and filtration. However, this should not be considered to be an exhaustive list, identification of which forms a substantial part of the proposed project.The project will involve the exchange of information to enable eligible processes to be identified. These will then be assessed and, where appropriate, exploratory simulations and measurements undertaken. The major deliverable from the project will be a report that identifies the potential for each application area and, importantly, suggests a forward plan for more detailed consideration of suitable applications.
