Summary on Grant Application Form |
A Renishaw micro-Raman system will be located within the UMIST physics department. The system will be able to use a UV light (He-Cd) laser or Argon-ion laser and will be used to study a range of materials supplied by collaborators elsewhere including Industrial sponsors as well as other University departments. The UV capability of the system is aimed specifically at both the nitride system which is of great technological importance for light emitting devices and also the oxide catalyst materials which also have large bandgaps.Other projects include the high pressure phases of ice and in-filled opals and carbon nanotubes-these will use the high spatial resolution of the system to probe local chemical composition and strain. The instrument will allow researchers access to an increasingly essential characterisation technique located within a suite of labs containing a number of complementary surface science and spectroscopy instruments. The applicants will also collaborate on the development of UV Raman spectroscopy with Renishaw plc who will contribute financially to the project.
