Summary on Grant Application Form |
To investigate the feasibility of using non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma methods (corona and dielectric barrier) for the removal of odorous gaseous components emitted from active landfill sites and for post-closure gas management of landfill sites. Plasma methods have previously been shown to be exceptionally effective for the removal of trace species in waste gas streams and the destruction efficiency of the key five odorous gases most commonly found in landfill sites will be investigated in a variety of configurations. Attention will also be paid to the destruction of halocarbons found in domestic landfill sites. Infrared spectroscopy and GC-mass spectrometry will be used to investigate the destruction efficiencies and identify the end-products. It is proposed to also use dynamic olefactometric methods to assess the reduction in odour intensity. It will also be important to investigate any possible competition effects on the destruction in using gas mixtures representative of real landfill gas emissions rather than just single compounds. In final studies, it is proposed to treat real gas samples collected from a landfill site.EngProg\
