The package will provide training in the key engineering issues (from technologies, through networks and systems to services and applications) associated with the industrially and commercially critically important area of the emerging `converged' communications environment. Rapid synergistic growth of telecommunications, the internet - the data-wave - and multimedia services has led to an unprecedented pace and scale of change. The attendant requirements for advanced education and training for graduates and for re-skilling for existing practising engineers in Industry is very great indeed. There is particular demand for a high level of awareness and capability combining both traditional telecommunication networks and services and IP networks and associated technologies. Further, it is recognised that thismust be seen within a 'business' context, including commercial drivers and the implications/limitations /opportunities irnposed/afforded by policy and regulatory considerations. Engineers working on the development of these new networks and their applications require a good understanding of underlying operational principles, design, performance assessment and network and services management, right through to services and applications. There is exceptionally strong industry demand for these skills and a serious shortage of supply. This package addresses this by providing a fully-modular programme serving recent graduates of electronics, computing and related disciplines and also practitioners in industry to train or further develop them to fully contribute to this most important of technical and economic sectors. The programme structure has been designed in close collaboration with industry both to meet the technic al/graduate recruitment needs of the sector and to facilitate the participation of industrial practitioners. It provides both a full MSc (full-time and part-time) and also, at modest incremental cost, a portfolio offering of individual modules which industry can use for specialised training of existing employees. In addition to conventional course presentation and attendance web-based materials and delivery will facilitate distance learning and use of course components in the context of Continuing Professional
