Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal seeks to extend the funding of the Sheffield Central Faciliity for III-V Semiconductors for a four year period. The case is based on the unique and highly strategic position which the Facility holds, as the major provider to EPSRC grant holders, of high quality, complex epitaxial multilay in the (InGaAl) / (AsPSbN) materials systems and in the provision of a widely used device fabrication service. There are currently 42 grants and 34 u groups in UK universities drawing on the Facility. Strong emphasis will be placed on forward looking research to ensure provision of state of the art structures over the next 5 to 10 years. We expect to continue to work with the 30 or more academic groups with whom we have collaborated very clc in the past in support of their EPSRC funded grants, together with any successful newcomers. Close interactions will be maintained with leading UK companies in the field including Epichem, VG Semicon, Thomas Swan, IQE, Marconi, Agilent, Bookham and DERA (Malvern) in the areas of reagen reactors, growth and devices. The important new role of the Central Facility as a PhD training centre, in collaboration with the above companies, will emphasised.
