Summary on Grant Application Form |
Particles, cells and other discontinuities in an ultrasonic standing wave (USW) experience forces that drive them towards preferred regions of the sound field. Acoustic microstreaming induces orderly boundary-layer modifying flows in the particle-suspending phase and in fluid solutions. These generic USW properties can modify boundary layer properties; induce mixing, manipulate, concentrate and filter particles and cells; and modify mass transfer behaviour at system boundaries. Through these mechanisms USW systems have the potential to overcome fundamental problems in a wide range of Life Science areas including tissue engineering, microfluidics, biosensing and medicine. This network application is concerned with achieving the aims outlined above. Initially it is proposed theat there will be 12 members from 12 individual sites, in some cases from several departments within a site. The dissemination of information via a web-page is intended to increase the membership of the network to encourage promulgation of ideas to facilitate serendipitous as well as more predictable discoveries.
